🇨🇦 Hack The North 2023! @ImDeet-U045B4BQ2T0, @fayd and I teamed up to make :goose-dance: Hack The Geese :goose-honk-left:! It was a game that attendees could play using the QR codes on their badges. Here’s how’d it work: 1. You’d scan your badge’s QR code to log in. 2. Your find someone who you’d like to compete against and scan their badge’s QR code. 3. You’d both receive a prompt, eg. “take a selfie with a someone with blue hair”. 4. You’d race to take a fun picture based on the prompt before the other player does. 5. You either win or lose, then you got to choose wether or not to rematch! You can go to htgeese.tech/album to see all the photos that folks took during demos with the game (and many more of me stressing over the backend)! We used a slightly cursed combination of a Next.js frontend and a backend written in Go which interacted with one another through Websockets…. yeah, very cursed and very jank. We also used Vercel’s new Postgres & Blob storage services which were surprisingly good. And, of course, we used Prisma…. including it’s slightly hacky spin-off Go client. Another awesome part of the game was @ImDeet-U045B4BQ2T0’s custom designed geese (GEESE!): :htn-goose-1: :htn-goose-2: :htn-goose-3: :htn-goose-4: :htn-goose-5: :htn-goose-6: :htn-goose-7: :htn-goose-8: :htn-goose-9: :htn-goose-10: Every player got one of these made for them when they first signed! The game was a bunch of fun to play IRL and we had people playing it throughout the demo session. Attached is a sick selfie of @fayd in his sunnies and the judge! And at the end of the day, somehow, we were selected as winners so we got to demo on stage and won a couple of prizes which was pretty cool! Here’s us playing a game with all the attendees and a couple of other photos from the weekend (including us working on the project while on #hack-night!). The GitHub is full of more photos and stories from the weekend: github.com/sampoder/hack-the-geese. O CANADA!

Sometimes you got to make do with what you got. My only decent PC died after 7 years today, so until I can afford a new one, this is my new setup (Steam Deck as a desktop). Unfortunately I’ll have to live without a dual monitor setup (unless the deck itself counts but that’s only usable for Spotify & YouTube, not code docs cause the screen is so small) And there’s no head phone jack on the dock I have, so for YouTube videos I’ll be enjoying the crisp Steam Deck speakers. However for Spotify, I connected an old Android phone to my speakers that I can remote control from the desktop app. Ended up installing Fedora Silverblue over Steam OS so I can still develop still (#project-still). So far first day experience, browsing is smooth, Jetbrains IDEs run somewhat smooth, ironically the only thing the desktop Steam Deck sucks for is gaming because it’s only made to handle 720p, not 1080p. Other than that, I can make this work until I can get a new PC. Hoping to go for a framework.

You can claim your domain today! It has a fully-featured DNS management panel, with more features like email forwards and PURLs coming soon!! Go to obl.ong and join the waitlist! All the code for the admin panel and is fully AGPL open source at github.com/obl-ong/admin. This is really meaningful for me to finally see this be shippable, and me and @m04 have been working on this for some time now. (p.s don't tell anyone but just go to admin.obl.ong and sign up :P)

Mini ship! (somehow this is my first ship, i’ve been here for months and haven’t shipped, wow) I’ve always been interested in ambient information, and here are two little projects based on that! The first one is a weather display. It’s powered by this guide code, but I made a few changes to make it my own. The other is just a big clock. Again, it’s based on a guide, but I added the date to the bottom (because in my house we get very confused about the date sometimes lol).

Wahoo! Today I learned how to use :vite: and I moved my github.com/jzaleta/night-skies project to use it! It was very fun to implement ES modules and to find janky :jankman: ways to add P5.js to it. :peefest: You can check the result site at night-skies.vercel.app like last time and star it ⭐ on GitHub if you want :) I still need to find a way to properly add meta tags so my index.html isn't very big but anyways this was nice to hack on.

Today, I (accidentally) made a virus. First, I finally got my macropad soldered for #onboard, yay! Then, I decided to test it out using some hastily written code that was partially copied from the internet. (Foreshadowing: Nothing I try ever works the first time.) When I tried it on my computer, it started inputing a bunch of random characters and did really weird stuff, like opening the shut down dialog and running a bunch of keyboard shortcuts, even when I wasn't pressing down on any of the keys. Guess I'll be debugging code tomorrow!

In May 2023, I have, for the first time, sponsored & organized a hackathon! 🎉 The event invited fellow students of all levels of mastery in computer science, and allowed participants at my school to form teams, make friends, innovate, win prizes, sharpen skills of all types (computer science, entrepreneurship, and beyond), and have a fun & memorable experience. 🎁 It was also a major personal goal for me that I am happy to have achieved before I graduate high school. :smiley-twemoji: :thumbsup-dino: Taking my past personal memories at hackathons I've attended, such as BetaNYC (March 2020) and Hack Club's Epoch Vermont (December 2022) :epoch: The 2-day-long McCown Hacks :mccownhacks: also made a great closing to the third year (2022-2023) of Gaynor McCown Hack Club :gaynormccown:, and an awesome milestone of my nearly complete high school career 🎓 , in which my passion for computer science was sparked! :gaynor-mccown-gradient: McCown Hacks website: McCownHacks.hackclub.com McCown Hacks 2023 (inaugural event/first year) website: 2023.McCownHacks.hackclub.com

I finally finished my confetti thing for #angelhacks-site! :angelhacks: github.com/hackclub/angelhacks3/pull/8 :pr: This is my first time working with Next.js :nextjs: and I wanted to see if I could code something with it without reading any docs! *How?* • Well, first I had an error, I couldn't start the dev environment! :pensive-wobble: To fix this I (somehow) installed next globally and that allowed my package.json :npm: to run next build • After that, I wrote the confetti code and implement it on a React :react: component but I also don't know any react so it didn't work :eggsdee: • So I added the confetti code into the already existing PhotoGallery component! :yay: Everything looked good, but then I got this error: ReferenceError: document is not defined :errors: • To fix that, I run my code client side after watching a small tutorial and it ended up like this:
import Masonry from 'react-masonry-css'
import styles from './PhotoGallery.module.scss'
import { Nunito } from 'next/font/google'
import { useEffect } from 'react'

const nunito = Nunito({
  weight: ['400', '800'],
  subsets: ['latin']
})

export function Button({ children, fontSize = '7rem', ...props }) {
  const handleClick = () => {
    import('js-confetti').then(({ default: Confetti }) => {
      const confetti = new Confetti()
      confetti.addConfetti({
        emojis: ['🎮', '👾', '🕹️', '💻', '📸', '🎧', '🎨', '🪽']
      })
    })
  }

  return (
    <button className={styles.button} onClick={handleClick} {...props}>
      <span className={styles.shadow} />
      <span className={styles.edge} />
      <span
        style={{ fontSize }}
        className={`${styles.front} ${nunito.className}`}>
        {children}
      </span>
    </button>
  )
}

function Image({ src, text }) {
  return (
    <div className={styles.photo}>
      <img src={src} width="auto" />
      <p>{text}</p>
    </div>
  )
}

export default function PhotoGallery() {
  useEffect(() => {}, [])
  return (
    <div className={styles.photoGallery}>
      <div className={styles.photos}>
This was very fun to work with, and definitely I need to properly learn Next.js on the future. :salute:

What if your club could collaborate with other clubs? What if you could connect with another club for a mini-hackathon or even make new friends while traveling and discovering a Hack Club in another city? The Club Directory unlocks the power of cross-club collaboration, allowing clubs to transcend boundaries and create together. If this interests you, join #clubs-directory @Arpan had this vision and shared it with me, and we decided to make it a reality. We've been working on the tool for about a week (maybe two). I'll catch you up on what we've done in the following screenshots: Screenshot 1: Arpan and I collaborated on a call to create the general user flow for the Club Directory. Screenshot 2: Arpan and I split ways, and he began focusing on the backend while I focused on the frontend. See the UI prototype I created attached. Screenshot 3: We realized we were a bit out of scope, so we narrowed the scope for our MVP so we can ship ASAP and work more closely with the community. Screenshot 4: I'm coding the frontend MVP in NextJS while Arpan builds the backend in FastAPI. p.s. currently I am working on multiselect & making that experience awesome & next I'll focus on responsiveness & map view also privacy is a big concern and we're currently trying to work through how we can allow clubs to opt-in (or maybe opt-out) of the Club Directory) all data shared here is fake club data, dw we're not revealing real data in this post the old internal name was Club Network and the new name is Club Directory

I discovered a React Component Extractor and now I do not have to spend a bunch of time cleaning up my code, instead I get to spend only a little bit of time cleaning up my code 😄

Today marks the end of my time as the Dorman Hack Club leader, as I officially handed over the reins to Jaime, our club's next leader. I am excited to see how he leads his club and grateful for his decision to continue this space for makers at DHS. In addition, today also marks the release of the Carolina Hacks mini-documentary (attached to this post). Carolina Hacks was a hackathon that my friends and I organized, and it was a truly unforgettable experience. Thanks to everybody who helped make it awesome.

Today I learned about the some method! I found it really useful for a search algorithm I am currently working on. It allows you to see if any value in an array meets a certain condition 😄

Greetings,:beatsaber: fellow Hackers, Hack Clubbers & hardware wizards! It's Day 12 of WHW #hardware-party, and I come bearing exciting news from our winter wonderland drone project. After weeks of hard work, late nights, and endless cups of hot water (Did not have cocoa:sadge:), we've finally done it! Our drone is complete!!!:aussieparrot: The drone has very cool attachments & features like a high-resolution camera and advanced sensors that can detect changes in temperature, humidity, and air pressure. It's highly adaptable and can fly in humid, fog, and terrain which is difficult to traverse! Along the road, we faced our fair share of difficulties, from debugging code to testing flight stability while being ill, but I overcame them all with the help of my trusty hot water and team spirit. It was all worthwhile in the end. We have developed a drone that is not only useful but also a tonne of fun. In the end, I would like to T:hackclub-slack:ANK @HackClubBank-U04SEGJ8WN5 for funding this project and @MelanieSmith for overseeing it, and @TanishqUpmanu-U04F0RWGARH for helping me so much! Now, let's raise a cup of hot water (cocoa for the rich people☕) to this fantastic journey of building a drone project and celebrating its end. This will be my last WHW post and #drone series. Thank you all for supporting! I'll see you all tomorrow! Bye, Goodnight! PS : Gonna get into all the #44-74 stuff going around! Gotta solve those mysteries YK!

Day 2/3 of #hack-club-at-fossasia-23!! I felt the need to post about this as a ship, as we committed a couple of shenanigans along the way~ :sphere: 1. Yes, we did a lil thing to #place - some of us here got bored and went to a Starbucks, where we sat and masterfully constructed the one and only John Cena. Then, we returned to the place and updated the board with a photo from #lion-city-hacks-bts!! DON'T WORRY WE ARE NOT HERE TO TROLL (although the john cena one was good, it was just a test - sorry @belle :p) 2. I worked with LionsForge to laser-cut a @dinobox acrylic piece! Going to buy an LED base to put this on :partyparrot: 3. Many stickers from everywhere - this is now the premier event where I got the most swag from 4. We set up a challenge for FOSSASIA participants to draw their versions of @orpheus!! The results were.... pretty diverse, and we will be sending them sometime tomorrow ~I think~ Here are some photos from today - a video update can be found in our planning channel linked above! See ya :pirateparrot:

Learning about diffusers with fast.ai has been really interesting. Today, I tested what I'd learned by hosting a mini-lecture with some of my peers that are part of our school's Hack Club, and began to dive deeper into U-Nets and Variational Autoencoders to understand how diffusion models work under the hood. We also continued work on our soundboard!

#burrow! This is an awesome project! Maybe I'll learn Rust to help with it one day! :rust: I wasn't able to stay the full call but I'm definitely joining again next time. Also I read a bit on SineRider's code, I'll try to get back at working on the translations as soon as possible.
